Time for Beer

Creating the Time for Beer Blog – What we had to learn!

The past week has been a steep learning curve for me! Daniel and I had been discussing setting up a blog to share our passion for homebrew for a while. Neither of us had ever set up a blog before so we had a lot of research to do. I set about learning the best way for beginners to get a blog on the web and just a week later, here we are! This post will walk you through the steps we took in creating the Time for Beer Blog.

How to Create a Blog

Creating the Time for Beer Blog was a totally new process for me! I have never created a blog or website before, I had no idea how to do it or what I would need to use to create our website! A few quick Google searches made it clear that I would need software to create the blog. Many bloggers recommend WordPress .org because it is easy to use and gives great functionality. The ease of use was definitely something that interested me, being a newbie at all of this! So, that was settled, WordPress.org it would be. Now I got a little confused though… What should I do next?

I thought I should do a little research on this topic before jumping in. I borrowed WordPress All-in-One for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson from the library and started reading. It made the next steps clear for me. The first step was choosing a host that supported WordPress. That’s what I set about to do next.

Choosing a Host and Domain Name for our Blog

Having settled on WordPress as the software we would use, we had to to choose a host and domain name. Choosing a host is incredibly confusing with SO MANY options! We opted for an Australian based host – hostmate.com.au due to its competitive pricing and good reviews. An added bonus is that you are able to purchase a domain name with them. WordPress installation is also part of the package. The whole sign up process was very easy, choosing a domain name was the hardest part!

Daniel and I had discussed a couple of options for the name of this blog but settled on Time for Beer. We chose this name because we have a little sign that makes regular appearances in Daniel’s current Facebook posts about freshly poured brews that reads “Time for Beer”. It felt right and we feel it conveys what this blog will be about – beer and brewing.

Being Australian, we though having a .au domain would be useful. However, on further research we found that you can only register a .au domain name if you have an ABN. This homebrew blog is a hobby for now so we don’t have an ABN. A little more information on this topic can be found on the Australian Business Website. We discovered that timeforbeer.com was already taken so we chose timeforbeer.net and here we are!

Learning to Create a Blog using WordPress

With all of that figured out, I actually had to sit down and learn how to use the WordPress! As I mentioned earlier. I borrowed WordPress All-in-One for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson from the library and started reading. I actioned each step as I went, skimming over some of the technical stuff… (maybe I’ll come to regret that later but at this stage, simple is good!).

It turns out that it is all pretty intuitive once you’ve figured out what all the little bits mean (obviously I’m not an expert with website design/programming). The very fact it has taken me just a week to get this professional looking site up and running is testament to that. I’m still learning and discovering and that is all made so easy with a plethora of resources on every topic just a quick Google search away. I’m sure you will notice an improvement in our site as we get more comfortable and experienced. I am certain that anyone can have a go at creating a blog if they set their mind to it.

We’re both so excited to take you on this journey with us! Creating the Time for Beer Blog was just the start, I can’t wait to add more to our blog and share it!
